Objective
This review focuses on TCM as well as its bioactive ingredients for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD), from the perspectives of animal model construction, pharmacodynamic mechanisms and clinical studies of formulae.
Conclusions
In this review we summarised multiple TCM bioactive herbal ingredients and formulae for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) via oral or topical administration. Most TCMs exert anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-oxidative, and anti-angiogenic effects, which can attenuate AD through various mechanisms such as restoring skin barriers, balancing Th1/Th2 cells levels, as well as regulating cytokine and chemokine expression, with few side-effects.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
