Objective
Licorice is extensively applied in food as well as herbal medicine across the world, possessing a substantial share in the global market. It has made great progress in chemical and pharmacological research in recent years. Currently, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., Glycyrrhiza inflata Bat., and Glycyrrhiza glabra L. were officially used as Gan-Cao according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The review will facilitate the further research toward this herbal medicine.
Conclusions
Collectively, based on the studies of chemical, pharmacology, and biosynthesis of lico-rice, we could profoundly learn more about the formation of bioactive compounds in licorice, how those chemicals function, and how they interact with other constituents in the body. Withfurther research, we believe that novel agents with proved efficacy from licorice will bedeveloped. At the same time, the quality markers on this plant could be drafted and evaluatedaccording to the information we summarized together with further bioactive verification.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
