Objective
Chronic exposure of particulate matter of less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) has been considered as one of the major etiologies for various respiratory diseases. Adenophora stricta Miq. is a medicinal herb that has been used for treating respiratory diseases in East Asia. The present study investigated the effect of A. stricta root extract (AsE) on PM2.5-induced lung injury in mice.
Conclusions
Albeit our results provide evidence that AsE has the potential to protect the lungs in mice exposed to PM2.5, the efficacy of AsE in other particulate matters- or toxicants-induced lung disease models, in vivo role of Nrf2 on AsE-dependent pulmonary protection, and the efficacy and safety of AsE in human applications should be further explored to reach more robust conclusion.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
