Objective
Si-Miao-Wan (SMW), a tradiational Chinese medicinal formula used for the treatment of gout and gouty arthritis for many years. Liquid chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF/MS) method was established to identify the multiple constituents of SMW and its metabolites in rat biological samples after oral administration.
Conclusions
A total of 48 compounds, including 21 alkaloids, 12 organic acids, 2 terpenes, 3 lactones, 2 phytosterols, and 8 other compounds, were tentatively characterized in SMW. And a total of 28 prototype compounds and 10 metabolic components were found in the drug-containing biological samples. The identified compounds and metabolites may provide helpful chemical information for further pharmacology and mechanistic researches of SMW.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
