Objective
To investigate the influence of sunscreen formulation on photostability and toxicity by evaluating the effects of zinc oxide additives on small-molecule based ultraviolet-filter mixtures.
Conclusions
The presence of zinc oxide in sunscreens containing small-molecule UV-filters leads to significant photodegradation of the mixture and increased toxicity, indicating the need for caution when formulating such sunscreens.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
