Ureaplasma spp. in male infertility and its relationship with semen quality and seminal plasma components

Objective
To investigate the prevalence of Ureaplasma spp. in semen samples of infertile men in Shanghai, China.
Conclusions
The study, involving 540 infertile men and 260 fertile control individuals, found a higher prevalence of Ureaplasma spp. in semen specimens of infertile men (39.6%) compared to the control group (19.2%). Among the clinical isolates, Ureaplasma parvum (UPA) was the most prevalent, followed by Ureaplasma urealyticum (UUR) and mixed species. The progressive motility and NAG activity of infertile men infected with UPA and mixed species were significantly lower than those infected with UUR.
