Objective
To present a case study of a 46-year-old woman diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism and evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture, as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in improving thyroid function and overall body function.
Conclusions
Acupuncture treatment, consisting of 11 sessions over a 3-month period, demonstrated promising results in the management of subclinical hypothyroidism. Before the treatment, the patient's TSH level was elevated at 9.19 mIU/L, and it decreased to 3.70 mIU/L during the treatment, ultimately normalizing to 3.09 mIU/L after completion. The selected acupuncture points targeted the thyroid and related meridians. The study suggests that acupuncture, as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, can provide rapid and positive outcomes in improving thyroid function and overall body energy in cases of subclinical hypothyroidism.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
