Objective
To present a case study of a 38-year-old woman with elevated anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) levels indicative of subclinical hypothyroidism, without prior thyroid disorders, and evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in normalizing anti-TPO levels and improving thyroid function.
Conclusions
Acupuncture treatment, consisting of 10 sessions over 6 months, demonstrated positive outcomes in the presented case of subclinical hypothyroidism. Before the treatment, the patient's anti-TPO level was elevated at 91.2 U/ml, and it normalized to 54.8 U/ml after completion. The slightly elevated TSH level (4.39 pIU/ml) also normalized to 2.08 pIU/ml. The selected acupuncture points targeted the thyroid and related meridians. The study suggests that acupuncture can be effective, especially in the early stages of autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, offering potential preventive benefits as well as positive outcomes in more advanced conditions.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
