Objective
To investigate the differences in fasting energy metabolism, sweet taste preference, and serum fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) concentration between the follicular (FP) and luteal (LP) phases of the menstrual cycle in healthy women.
Conclusions
During the follicular phase (FP), resting metabolic rate (RMR) was lower, respiratory quotient (RQ) showed borderline higher values, sweet taste preference was lower, and serum FGF21 concentration was higher compared to the luteal phase (LP), indicating associations between the menstrual cycle and changes in energy expenditure, sweet taste preference, and oxidative fuel partitioning.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
