The study suggests that acupuncture can alleviate pain and improve overall well-being in fibromyalgia patients.
The team conducted a thorough search of databases like PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Wanfang Database, Chongqing Weipu, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure from the earliest post to September 2021. They included only randomized or quasi-randomized controlled studies of acupuncture in patients with fibromyalgia. Using RevMan 5.3 software, they performed a quantitative analysis and thoroughly assessed the risk according to the Cochrane collaboration tool. Also, safety was evaluated through quantitative analysis.
In their findings, researchers observed from the 13 selected articles, with 12 used for quantitative analysis, that acupuncture could decrease pain and improve well-being for fibromyalgia patients. They also discovered that acupuncture has long-term benefits for pain reduction and well-being improvement. However, no evidence was found to suggest that acupuncture could improve fatigue, sleep quality, physical function, or stiffness. Notably, there were no serious adverse events associated with acupuncture treatment observed,
