Low-level laser therapy on acupuncture points can lessen pain and improve mouth opening ability in patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders.
A review was conducted according to Cochrane Collaboration guidelines strategizing on patient/problem, intervention, comparison, and outcome. A thorough literature search was completed across nine electronic databases including BVS, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and Google Scholar, along with gray literature. The risk of bias in randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials was evaluated using risk-of-bias 2 and ROBINS-I tools with seven studies, all involving LLLT, used for this review.
The examination of results showed a noteworthy decrease in spontaneous pain levels and an enhancement in immediate mouth opening ability with the application of LLLT. However, careful interpretation of these results is advised due to variations in study protocols and the limited number of studies that were included in the meta-analysis.
