Acupuncture treatment can significantly improve ovulation and pregnancy rates and regulate endometrial receptivity in infertile patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.
The study was a single-blind, randomized, sham acupuncture-controlled clinical trial involving 134 participants diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility. All patients were administered letrozole as the foundational treatment, with the experimental group receiving additional acupuncture therapy twice weekly, while the control group received placebo acupuncture therapies over the course of three menstrual cycles. Data was collected at the beginning and conclusion of treatment, pertaining to ovulation and pregnancy rates, levels of various sex hormones, and endometrial receptivity.
The results indicated that the ovulation and pregnancy rates in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Additionally, the experimental group showed a notable decrease in testosterone levels. Endometrial receptivity, as assesses via the Salle Score, was also found to be significantly higher in the treatment group. Measurement of uterine blood flow patterns revealed that the treatment group had substantially lower pulsatility and resistance indexes, indicating greater endometrial receptivity. This evidence suggests that acupuncture is an effective alternative therapy for enhancing fertility outcomes in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.
