Traditional Chinese medicine treatments showed sustained response in a child's chronic immune thrombocytopenia resistant to conventional treatments.
The methodology used in this report revolves around a 6-year-and-1-month-old girl who displayed a poor response to conventional treatments for chronic immune thrombocytopenia like glucocorticoids and intravenous immunoglobulin. She was then treated with a traditional Chinese medicine formula as a complementary therapy.
The discussion of the results showed that a sustainable positive response to the TCM treatment was observed for the child over three years. Her platelet levels were maintained within a safe range with no signs of bleeding. TCM treatments, such as Guipi Decoction, Ziyin Jianghou Decoction, and Shengxuexiaoban Capsules, were found to possess immunoregulatory effects that helped enhance platelet production and exerted anti-inflammatory and hematopoietic properties. This suggests that integrative approaches, including TCM, might provide additional therapeutic benefits for pediatric patients suffering from chronic or refractory immune thrombocytopenia.
