Suanzaoren Decoction, a traditional Chinese herbal formulation, can improve insomnia and depression by modifying gut microbiome and balancing metabolic pathways associated with both disorders.
Through utilizing ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, the research examines 66 chemical constituents within Suanzaoren Decoction, a popular traditional Chinese herbal formulation. The experiment uses various dosages of Suanzaoren Decoction on rat models presenting symptoms of insomnia and depression. Injecting low-dose Suanzaoren Decoction substantially improves insomnia symptoms while administration of a high-dose significantly alleviates depressive behaviors in the experimental subjects.
The research also observes significant changes in the gut microbiota of the experimental subjects, characterized by an enlarged population of bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids. Additionally, they found metabolic profiles indicating imbalance in affected rats, especially noticeable in reduced levels of certain amino acid metabolites and modifications in neurotransmitter metabolism within the brain.
Suanzaoren Decoction restores a healthy balance in gut microbiota, reestablishes fecal short-chain fatty acid levels, and corrects metabolic disturbances in both body fluid and brain tissue. This highlights how regulation of gut microbiome and metabolic pathways are key areas through which the therapeutic effects of Suanzaoren Decoction are mediated, forming a scientific rationale for its usage in managing insomnia and depression.
