A water extract of "tianma", "gouteng", and "ezhu" has shown neuroprotective effects against ischemic injury via its anti-apoptotic properties.
The study used a water extract of "tianma", "gouteng", and "ezhu", each known for their medicinal properties, to assess potential neuroprotective effects against ischemic injury. Flow cytometry analysis and Western blot tests were conducted to evaluate their impact on apoptotic cells in CoCl induced B35 and SH-SY5Y cell samples. The expressions of Bcl-2, Bax, and Caspase-3 were also measured, with a particular focus given to their upregulation and downregulation attributes respectively.
In the evaluation of results, the extract was found to reduce the proportion of apoptotic cells effectively. It successfully upregulated the expression of Bcl-2 and downregulated Bax and Caspase-3, both actions involved in the prevention of cellular apoptosis. The data from infarct volume analysis and observations of the expressions of Caspase-7 also confirmed the declared neuroprotective effect of the water extract against induced ischemic injury.
