Objective
To investigate a case of unilateral fibrosis and reduced pinch-grip strength in the first dorsal interosseous muscle following acupuncture injection therapy with red sage.
Conclusions
The study concludes that acupuncture injection therapy with red sage may cause fibrosis and impaired muscle strength, potentially through antiseptic, mechanical, or pharmacological effects, and recommends mechanically stimulating the LI4 acupoint while injecting the herbal medicine into the LI14 acupoint instead.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
