Objective
To investigate changes in the electroencephalogram associated with acupuncture needle insertion and fainting in a healthy adult participant during acupuncture stimulation at the LI4 acupuncture point.
Conclusions
This single case suggests that acupuncture needle insertion and fainting produce distinct electroencephalogram changes, with multiple cortical areas activated during fainting and an increased gamma-wave ratio observed only during needle insertion.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
