Objective
To investigate the local response and underlying mechanism of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation at the Hegu acupoint.
Conclusions
Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation induced sensory nerve fibres to express calcitonin gene-related peptide and substance P, which activated neurokinin-1 receptors on mast cells and caused mast cell degranulation with serotonin release, generating acupuncture-like signals.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
