Electroacupuncture partly reversed continuous-light-induced glucose dysregulation and reproductive hormone disruption in female rats.
Female rats were assigned to normal light-dark conditions, continuous light exposure, or continuous light exposure followed by five weeks of electroacupuncture at two leg and ankle acupuncture points. Researchers monitored reproductive cycles, fasting blood glucose, and blood levels of insulin and testosterone to assess ovarian and pancreatic function.
Continuous light disrupted reproductive cycles, produced ovarian changes resembling polycystic ovary syndrome, raised fasting blood glucose, and lowered insulin and testosterone. Electroacupuncture reduced the glucose elevation, improved cycle disruption, and lessened declines in insulin and testosterone, suggesting protection against light-related ovarian and pancreatic dysfunction.
