A single acupuncture session may offer a simple non-drug approach to relieve pain and improve recovery after blunt chest injury.
This double-blind randomised controlled trial assigns patients with blunt chest injury and a small number of rib fractures to either genuine acupuncture or visually similar placebo acupuncture without needle penetration. Participants receive one treatment after diagnosis, with selected points applied to both groups. Outcomes are assessed through pain ratings, breathing function, sleep quality, daily medication use, and follow-up assessments over several months.
The study is designed to determine whether genuine acupuncture improves pain, sleep, respiratory function, and medication requirements more effectively than placebo treatment. Its central contribution is testing a carefully blinded press-tack needle approach that could distinguish acupuncture-specific benefits from placebo effects in patients whose injuries are commonly managed only with pain medicines and breathing exercises.
