This trial tests whether extending acupuncture from four to eight weeks produces more durable improvements in knee osteoarthritis symptoms and function.
The study uses a pragmatic, parallel-group randomised controlled design comparing four weeks with eight weeks of electroacupuncture for adults with knee osteoarthritis. Participants receive treatment three times weekly, while outcome assessors and data analysts remain unaware of group allocation. Outcomes are measured through follow-up to assess symptom response, pain, function, stiffness, quality of life, overall patient assessment, use of rescue medication, and cost-effectiveness.
The trial is designed to determine whether a longer acupuncture course improves longer-term clinical response compared with a shorter course. It will also compare groups across several patient-centred outcomes, including knee symptoms, daily function, quality of life, medication use, and economic value.
