Poor sleep may contribute to premature ovarian insufficiency, while combining a Chinese herbal formula with hormone replacement improves sleep and reproductive hormone balance.
The study used three complementary approaches: a cross-sectional assessment of patients with premature ovarian insufficiency, genetic analyses using large public health datasets to examine whether insomnia could causally influence the condition, and a clinical observational comparison of Chinese herbal treatment, hormone replacement therapy, or their combination. Researchers evaluated reproductive hormone measures, sleep quality, treatment effectiveness, and safety over a treatment period.
Poorer sleep quality was associated with disrupted reproductive hormone levels, and genetic evidence suggested that insomnia may increase susceptibility to premature ovarian insufficiency. The combined herbal and hormone treatment produced greater improvements in reproductive hormones, sleep quality, and overall clinical response than either treatment alone, while appearing well tolerated.
