Adding augmented Yu Ping Feng San to montelukast modestly improved asthma control symptoms in children without improving lung function or other clinical outcomes.
Children aged six to eighteen years with mild persistent asthma were enrolled in a single-centre, placebo-controlled, double-blind randomised trial. Participants received either augmented Yu Ping Feng San plus oral montelukast or placebo plus montelukast for twenty-four weeks. Researchers assessed lung function as the main outcome and measured asthma control, quality of life, symptom-free days, rescue medication use, corticosteroid treatment, hospitalisation, emergency consultations, and adverse-effect-related withdrawal.
The herbal medicine group showed improved asthma control questionnaire scores from baseline, whereas the placebo group did not. However, the groups did not differ in lung function, quality of life, symptom-free days, rescue treatment use, hospital care, or emergency consultations. Withdrawals due to adverse effects were similar between treatments.
