Chinese herbal medicine may reduce relapse and improve several nasal allergy symptoms in children, while also lowering immunoglobulin E levels.
Researchers systematically searched international and Chinese medical databases for randomized controlled trials comparing Chinese herbal medicine with control treatments for childhood allergic rhinitis. Nineteen eligible studies were pooled using meta-analysis software to assess overall treatment response, symptom changes, recurrence, and immunoglobulin E levels.
Compared with control treatments, Chinese herbal medicine showed better overall effectiveness, lower recurrence, and improvements in sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion. It also reduced immunoglobulin E levels, although nasal itching did not show a clear improvement.
