Safety of Acupuncture: Overview of Systematic Reviews
Chan, M.W.C., Wu, X.Y., Wu, J.C.Y. et al. · Scientific Reports · 2017 June 13
DOI 10.1038/s41598-017-03272-0
Objective
To collect all systematic reviews (SRs) on the adverse events (AEs) of acupuncture and related therapies.
Conclusions
Minor and serious adverse events (AEs) can occur during the use of acupuncture and related modalities, contrary to the common impression that acupuncture is harmless. Serious AEs are rare, but need significant attention as mortality can be associated with them.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
