Objective
To determine the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on mortality and morbidity in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).
Conclusions
No trial satisfied our predefined inclusion criteria. Existing trials only evaluated acupuncture in older infants who survived hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). There are currently no randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of acupuncture for treatment of HIE in neonates. The safety of acupuncture for HIE in neonates is unknown.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
