Objective
To evaluate the available evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on serum leptin levels in obese patients.
Conclusions
This review suggests that acupuncture for obesity has a beneficial effect on serum leptin levels compared to no treatment or oral anorexiant. Additional acupuncture treatment on diet therapy or exercise demonstrated a greater reduction in serum leptin levels, whereas no significant difference was shown between the acupuncture and sham acupuncture groups.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
