Objective
Polygonatum odoratum (Mill.) Druce is one of famous traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), which has been used as medicines and edible food. There are various bioactive substances in Polygonatum odoratum, including carbohydrate, amino acid, vitamin and protein. In this paper, the extraction, purification, structural characteristics and functional activities of polysaccharide from Polygonatum odoratum are summarized, which would provide a reference for its development and utilization.
Conclusions
With the expansion of market demands and the growth of diversified applications, polysaccharide of P. odoratum has attracted great attention. As a kind of medicine food homologous plant with multiple biological activities, there is still great potential to explore its polysaccharides both in the structure and bioactive. Its structure-activity relationship, clinical experiment, drug and food application, development and utilization are deserved to be explored, which would provide references for the further quality control and potential utilization.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.
