Acupuncture, in conjunction with Chinese herbs, enhances the treatment of uterine fibroids over the use of Chinese herbs alone.
A comprehensive literature search across eight databases was undertaken to identify randomized controlled trials that evaluated the combined clinical efficacy of acupuncture and Chinese herbs, versus Chinese herbs alone, in treating uterine fibroids. These trials were then subjected to data extraction and analysis to evaluate their methodological quality and potential biases.
Discussion of results: A total of nine trials, involving 640 women, were included in this study. The combined analysis of these trials suggested that using acupuncture alongside Chinese herbs had a significantly punctuated effect on uterine fibroids treatment. This enhanced efficacy included a reduction in uterine size, lower hormone levels, and an improvement in the quality of life of patients, demonstrating a more pronounced therapeutic outcome than treatment with Chinese herbs alone.
