Chaihu-shugan-san, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, shows antitumor properties and reduces the expression of the PDGF gene in cervical cancer cells.
The researchers assessed the impact of Chaihu-shugan-san on the cytotoxicity induction and PDGF gene expression in a cervical cancer cell line, HeLa. They manipulated the concentrations and duration of treatment using this traditional Chinese herbal concoction which comprises seven different herbs. They leveraged the MTT method to observe the drug's effect and employed Paclitaxel + cisplatin as a control group. The comparative analysis of PDGF gene expression in treated cells was conducted using real-time PCR.
The MTT test results indicated the antitumor capability of Chaihu-shugan-san, manifesting varying degrees of efficacy at different concentrations. Despite its promising outcomes, there was substantial deviation in its performance against the control group, paclitaxel +cisplatin. Furthermore, analysis of gene expression demonstrated that Chaihu-shugan-san effectively suppressed the expression of the PDGF gene in HeLa cells, signifying its potential influence in decelerating the growth of cervical cancer cells and managing angiogenic factors pivotal in the metastasis of cancerous tumors.
