Objective
To investigate whether an optimized acupuncture formula improves the clinical efficacy of treatment for insomnia associated with depression compared with conventional acupuncture treatment.
Conclusions
The optimized acupuncture formula has potential benefits for increasing the efficacy of treatment for insomnia associated with depression.
Critical Appraisal
Published research can offer valuable insights, but a paper’s conclusions may go beyond what its results support. Critical appraisal examines the methods, findings and limitations to clarify what can reasonably be concluded—and what remains uncertain.

Insights
An optimized acupuncture point combination may improve sleep and depressive symptoms more effectively than conventional acupuncture for people with depression-related insomnia.
This randomized, controlled, multicentre study enrolled people diagnosed with depression-related insomnia and assigned them equally to conventional acupuncture or an optimized acupuncture regimen. The optimized approach used selected wrist and ankle points alongside alternating combinations of back and sleep-related points, including embedded needles to sustain treatment effects. Sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and use of antidepressant and sleep medications were assessed repeatedly from treatment initiation through completion.
The study was designed to determine whether the optimized acupuncture formula produced greater improvements in insomnia and depression than conventional acupuncture. Its comparison of symptom measures and medication use aimed to assess whether the tailored point combinations offered a clinically meaningful advantage for treating sleep disturbance associated with depression.
