Expert-designed individualized treatment protocols can make acupuncture and medical symptom management comparable within palliative care research despite variable patient needs.
Experts developed treatment protocols for acupuncture and medical symptom management targeting breathlessness, itching, excessive saliva, depression, anxiety, and dry mouth in palliative care. The protocols were designed to preserve individualized care while providing sufficiently consistent treatment across a three-group randomized comparison, with medical symptom management available to every group and sham laser acupuncture used as one control approach.
The work addresses the challenge that standardized research plans may not reflect the individualized nature of both acupuncture and palliative care. By creating expert-informed protocols for both interventions, the study aims to support fair comparisons between acupuncture, sham laser acupuncture, and medical symptom management while maintaining adequate symptom relief.
