Paeoniflorin, a paeony root component, promotes glucose absorption by boosting estradiol secretion from fat cells, potentially preventing type 2 diabetes in menopausal women.
Adipocytes, created from 3T3-L1 cells, were cultivated in medium containing a variety of extracts, namely Kami-shoyo-san, paeony root, Kami-shoyo-san excluding paeony root, and paeoniflorin, for five days at specific conditions. Subsequently, paeoniflorin was injected once daily for 19 days into ovariectomized mice. A glucose tolerance test was then undertaken, along with determination of blood estradiol and adiponectin levels.
Discussion of Results: Results showed an increased secretion of estradiol from the treated adipocytes and a significant decrease in glucose concentration when the cells were treated with Kami-shoyo-san and paeoniflorin. Moreover, paeoniflorin-treated mice showed lower blood glucose levels after glucose loading, indicating that paeoniflorin may have the potential to prevent type 2 diabetes in menopausal women by increasing estradiol secretion from fat cells.
