The research found that combining Chinese patent medicines with conventional western medicine enhances the efficacy of Parkinson's disease treatments, particularly Qishen Huanwu capsules and Tianma Gouteng granules.
The study began with a comprehensive search of eight major databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which focused on the use of Chinese patent medicines for treating Parkinson's disease. The time period covered by the search spanned from each particular database's initial establishment to January 2, 2025. Once the trials were collected, they were systematically analyzed using specific data analysis software. The RCTs under consideration all involved a combination of the Chinese patent medicines with conventional western medicine.
In terms of results, the study examined 35 trials that included 3281 patients and involved 11 different Chinese patent medicines. The research revealed that different medicines excelled in different areas of treatment. For instance, Bushen Huoxue capsules displayed the highest total effective rates, while Tianma Gouteng granules were the most effective in reducing the overall effects of Parkinson's disease and in improving cognitive performance. Qishen Huanwu capsules were particularly effective in reducing certain biomarkers related to the disease. Other medicines showed efficacy in areas such as sleep improvement, antioxidant activity, and reduction of oxidative stress levels. Despite the variety of reactions, Qishen Huanwu capsules and Tianma Gouteng granules were identified as having the most optimal effects when used in conjunction with conventional western medicine.
