The combination therapy of electroacupuncture and electronic moxibustion alongside alpha blockers shows a potential positive impact on lower urinary tract symptoms in benign prostatic hyperplasia patients.
In this study, 28 benign prostatic hyperplasia patients were split into two groups - the treatment group and the control group. Participants in the treatment group were given prescribed alpha blockers and also received a combination therapy of electroacupuncture and electronic moxibustion three times a week for six weeks. The control group only continued to use their prescribed alpha blockers for the same period. The key outcome was the change in the international prostate symptom score from the start to the end of the 6-week period, with secondary outcomes evaluating symptom scores at the 3rd and 12th weeks, clinical relevance, and aspects of urinary flow rate and prostate volume.
The significant decline in the international prostate symptom score was noted at all data gathering points in the treatment group, illustrating a noteworthy difference between both groups. There were no considerable contrasts in terms of satisfaction with life, average and maximum urinary flow rates, and prostate volume. This suggests that electroacupuncture combined with electronic moxibustion may provide an adjunctive therapeutic benefit, factoring into the improvement of lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
