Acupuncture on vascular cognitive impairment associated with cerebral small vessel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized and non-randomized controlled trials
2022 Jan European Journal of Integrative Medicine Tang EC, Hung C, Lo SH, Chau JP, Mok VC, Lau AY
The meta-analysis, despite acknowledging a high risk of bias in all studies, suggests that acupuncture may demonstrate improvements in cognitive function assessments compared with various control interventions. Both MoCa (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) and MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) scores showed improvement with acupuncture compared to controls. Additionally, both conventional acupuncture and electro-acupuncture were found to be potentially beneficial for VCI associated with CSVD. However, the high risk of bias in the studies implies caution in interpreting the results, and further research with improved methodological quality is recommended.
