The therapeutic mechanism of Huashibaidu formula (HSBD) against sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI) mainly involved suppressing cytokine storms and relieving inflammatory symptoms by regulating the expression of TLR4/NF-κB and PI3K/Akt. Our study provides a scientific basis for the mechanistic investigation and clinical application of HSBD in the treatment of sepsis and COVID-19.

Ninety male mice were randomly split into five groups and orally treated for seven days with control, model, and varying doses of CEE. On the last day of administration, all mice except the control group were infected intratracheally with lipopolysaccharide to induce acute lung injury. The experiment then measured factors such as lung histopathology, lung wet/dry weight, white blood cell count, and various immunity-related substances in the lung tissue.
The results revealed that CEE could improve lung damage as evident in histopathology, reduce ratio of lung wet to dry weight and other indices, and hinder the increase in white blood cells, lymphocytes, and neutrophils. It also reduced pro-inflammatory markers while increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines and substances related to antioxidant activity. The effects of CEE were seen to be dose-dependent, suggesting that larger doses provided more benefit.
