The present researches have identified that Rhubarb, as a traditional Chinese medicine, plays a protective role in the liver, but sometimes it also induces hepatotoxicity. The recent data regarding the mechanisms on hepatoprotection and hepatotoxicity of Rhubarb were explained with potential links between them explored, hoping to provide recommendations for the better usage in clinical practice. At present, the long-term clinical surveillance and clinical investigations on the hepatotoxicity of Rhubarb are still insufficient.
