Increased prevalence of endocervical Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma colonization in infertile women with tubal factor
2020 Jan JBRA Assisted Reproduction Piscopo RCCP, Guimarães RV, Ueno J, Ikeda F, Bella ZIKJD, Girão MJBC, et al.
Women with positive endocervical bacterial colonization, particularly Mycoplasma hominis, had significantly higher rates of tubal factor infertility, suggesting a possible association between endocervical bacterial colonization and impaired tubal performance.
Clinical Study Female FertilityUreaplasma Urealyticum Infection Contributes to the Development of Pelvic Endometriosis Through Toll-Like Receptor 2
2019 Oct 04 Frontiers in Immunology Noh EJ, Kim DJ, Lee JY, Park JH, Kim JS, Han JW, et al.
The study demonstrated, using a mouse model of endometriosis, that U. urealyticum infection increased the numbers and sizes of ectopic endometriotic lesions, upregulated the production of inflammatory mediators (IL-6, CXCL1, CCL2), and enhanced expression of adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, VCAM-1) and MMP-2 in PMCs. The inflammatory responses were mediated primarily through TLR2 signaling, and infection-induced pelvic inflammation was proposed to contribute to the initiation and progression of endometriosis.
Experimental Study Animal Study Ureaplasma EndometriosisUreaplasma spp. in male infertility and its relationship with semen quality and seminal plasma components
2018 Dec Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection Zhou YH, Ma HX, Shi XX, Liu Y
The study, involving 540 infertile men and 260 fertile control individuals, found a higher prevalence of Ureaplasma spp. in semen specimens of infertile men (39.6%) compared to the control group (19.2%). Among the clinical isolates, Ureaplasma parvum (UPA) was the most prevalent, followed by Ureaplasma urealyticum (UUR) and mixed species. The progressive motility and NAG activity of infertile men infected with UPA and mixed species were significantly lower than those infected with UUR.

Systematic Review Female Fertility Mycoplasma
The researchers carried out a systematic review of literature to study the connection between genital mycoplasma infection and female infertility. They used three electronic databases, PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL, to gather studies conducted between January 2000 and January 2020. They derived pooled odds ratios and confidence intervals from a fixed effects model to determine the likelihood of female infertility due to genital mycoplasma infection.
The gathered studies showed that women suffering from infertility had higher odds of having some form of genital mycoplasma infection. The meta-analysis included a total of eight studies from six different countries. Subgroup analysis indicated a significant relation of infertility with particular infections, namely, Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, and Ureaplasma urealyticum. This key finding supports the development of guidelines targeting the diagnosis and treatment of these infections as a means to prevent female infertility.
Review Articles
Review articles summarise and critically evaluate the current state of research on a specific topic or field by synthesising multiple primary research studies.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that involve people and are conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of new treatments or interventions, such as drugs, medical devices, or behavioural therapies.
Study Protocols
Published study protocols are detailed plans that outline the objectives, methodology, statistical analyses, and organisation of a research study that have been made publicly available for others to review and use as a reference.
